Education Technology Grants Aim to Increase Student Retention and College Graduation

National statistics demonstrate that only fifty-percent of U.S. students who enroll in postsecondary education actually complete a degree program. In a major effort to increase student retention and college graduation, private organizations and the U.S. government are doling out grants to advance education through technology. In December 2009, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced $12.9 million ed-tech grants for community colleges and remedial courses. According to the Gates Foundation web site, the recipient of the grants will: • Work with community college educators to create cutting-edge virtual environments that will support teachers and improve students' academic performance. • Create collaborative technology and social media tools to form virtual communities for high quality educators to create a national certification program for teachers of remedial education. • Develop dynamic virtual learning labs, which can be freely accessed and used as open resources. EduCause, a non-profit organization, recently earmarked substantial funds for technology projects aimed at preparing students for college. One of EduCause's goals is to combine online classes with traditional classroom curricula, where students can take basic, non-credit, supplemental courses for college readiness. The grants will also focus on postsecondary education by creating technology to track students' academic performance in real time, as well as create open, virtual educational tools. Better Study Your Math If You Want a Seat on the 100-Year Starship Project

Perhaps you have heard that there is a new project going on with the help of NASA and DARPA - it is called; The Hundred Year Starship Project. In other words they plan on taking Star Trek, and many of the concepts behind it all, and making it a reality. And why not, it's been over 40 years since we put a man on the moon. It seems like we've been slacking. For anyone who stops and thinks about it, or anyone who was living through the 1970s, they would have thought that by now we would have a colony on Mars, one on the Moon, and have already built our Star Trek future. Something went terribly wrong. Luckily, the powers that be are going to embolden the innovative and entrepreneurial minds in the United States to take out those barriers and borders to thinking, and asked that they not only dream about such things, but assist in building that future. However, as much as this idea might make your mouth water, you won't be much good to the project, or even get a seat on the hundred year starship, if that's your goal, unless you study your math, unless you stay in school, and are able to match wits, intelligence, and abilities with the future graduates of MIT. We've all heard that funny quote; "it doesn't take a rocket scientist to do this, that, or the other thing," and yet here is something that may not take a rocket scientist, but it's going to take a great deal of mathematics to participate. To build the 100 year starship project, we are going to need new nanotech materials, new propulsion systems, new interstellar transportation strategies, biological modification, and so much more. All of which will require abilities in mathematics. Some might say that this project is geared towards keeping people in school, and producing more math and science students. Yes, I would agree that this is most likely one of the goals, but it is not the only goal, after all, the goal is to actually design, and start building the hundred year starship, and then "to boldly go, where no man has gone before!" Of course, if you drop out of school and if you don't take advanced math classes, then it's hard to say if you can be of much value to such a huge project, something that will revolutionize mankind, and change everything. If you want to be part of the future, you need to be thinking here, and you need to study your mouth and stay in school. Indeed I hope you will please consider all this and think on it.

Students are responsible for arranging for a proctor to supervise them. The proctor must be approved by the university, and many universities require that the proctor be one of the following: school administrator, counselor, certified librarian, military educator, test administrator at a testing office, or a minister of an established church or synagogue. When a university is deciding whether or not to utilize non-proctored vs. proctored exams, it is important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of both, as well as their effect on final course grades. Non-proctored exams offer many benefits in the virtual environment. They can provide accurate results in low stakes situations where the temptation for cheating is minimized, they give students a sense of ownership and responsibility, and they offer convenience and lower costs to educators and students. Although non-proctored exams offer many benefits, there are several disadvantages that should be a concern for universities. In an online learning environment there is no one reminding students about assignments being due or upcoming exams that are going to be administered. Of course, students are told the dates of exams, but when they know too far in advance, more often they will continue to push back studying until it's too late. Not being prepared to take the exam could be a disadvantage that leads to cheating during a non proctored exam. In today's society, the pressure to excel and receive good grades is growing. By having no proctors for an exam, students will get the extra urge to use resources for a test in order to meet those pressures of getting good grades. Another issue is the absence of verifying the student identification for non-proctored settings, it is impossible to know whether the registered student or a substitute has taken the test, or if students worked together on the exam. While non-proctored exams offer the benefits of flexibility, convenience and lower cost, a proctored exam is the alternative testing structure with the potential for maintaining higher standards of integrity and for providing more accurate assessments of students' actual learning and retention of the material. Instinct and anecdotal evidence would suggest that students taking non-proctored exams will cheat more often than students that are administered proctored exams. The primary argument that support this contention is opportunity. It is simply easier for test takers of non-proctored exams to cheat because they are not being monitored while completing their examination. Following the opportunity argument, proctored examinations also eliminate the possibilities of students working collaboratively, students obtaining unauthorized assistance from other people, and students having someone else complete the exam for them. Students cannot unfairly gain access to test questions and obtain answers to them, whereas an online non-proctored test taker might be again given access and allowed to retake an exam after alleged computer problems during the initial exam. As has been implied, there is more to consider in determining the difference in final course grades that result from proctored and non-proctored examination delivery methods. Of particular importance here is the course content delivery method: The traditional classroom environment or an online learning environment. It is important to differentiate between the two mistakenly interchangeable terms learning and grades. Learning is more appropriately associated with retention and long-term understanding, whereas grades can be achieved by, and are more appropriately associated with short-term memory. In addition to the academic dishonesty potential discussed earlier, a student might earn a higher grade on a non-proctored exam in an online setting by simply memorizing and learning the answers to questions for purposes of passing the exam but without the effect of commitment to understanding and long-term memory. Many students start to feel the crunch in the later years of high or secondary school. Many find the subject so intimidating that they feel unable or unwilling to progress any further. At least some of this difficulty can be attributed to the prevalent methods of instruction and attitudes that's practiced in most schools today.
