The families that do eat together spend more time communicating and sharing.
They build a sense of family identity and are more committed to each others well-being. These parents are more willing to share the kitchen and teach their children family traditions and recipes that have been passed from generation to generation. When kids help their mom in the kitchen, they learn about measurements, parenting skills (caring for the family), and culture.
First off, measurement is a skill that many of my 6th graders struggle with.
It may be due to several factors such as no hands on experience and the inability to apply it to real life.
I find that some of my 6th graders and middle school students in general have no clue how to use a ruler or measuring cups. I try to use real world situations in my classroom that require them to use rulers and measuring cups.
For example, my class and I went outside and measured different size plants and calculated the averages.
You can also use no bake recipes with parents permission of course and have the students use the measuring cups. This also great for parents who want to slowly introduce baking in the kitchen: In addition, they learn parenting skills that will last a lifetime and hopefully they will carry on the tradition with their kids. My kids love helping me in the kitchen.
When they help make the food, they actually eat all of it, even the vegetables.
Literally, I was in shock. Now, I let them help me more often. I guess when they cook their own food it gives them a sense of ownership and pride.
Lastly, when my kids help me in the kitchen they learn more about my family background and our culture.
We cook fried chicken, collard greens, candied yams, and macaroni and cheese which are staples in my family. We call it soul food. We cook black eyed peas on New Years day because it is suppose to bring our family luck.
We always bake Sweet potato pies on Thanksgiving and Christmas using a traditional family recipe.

Therefore wood left exposed to the elements should be protected against decay and destructive insects by applying chemical preservatives.
Several factors influence the degree of protection that can be achieved with chemical preservatives, including the species of wood being treated, the type of chemical being applied, the method of application, the degree of penetration of the preservative into the wood and the length of time the chemical is retained in the wood.
Wood preservatives are a type of pesticide, and as such their use is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency.
Certain preservatives are available for use by the general public while others, referred to as "restricted use" preservatives, are only available for use by certified applicators. Wood products treated with restricted use preservatives are not considered toxic by the EPA and their purchase and use is not regulated by the EPA.
Consumers may obtain EPA approved Consumer Information Sheets from retailers for more information about different preservatives and the proper disposal of treated products.
There are three general types of exposure categories for wood preservatives, including ground contact, above-ground contact and marine exposure. Products exposed to ground contact conditions are highly susceptible to decay and require a heavy-duty preservative, usually applied through pressure-treatment. Products exposed to above-ground conditions are less susceptible to decay and are usually treated with non-pressure-treatment methods.
Wood products exposed to under-water or marine environments are extremely susceptible to decay and require heavy-duty preservative treatments. There are two general types of wood preservatives, including oilborne preservatives and waterborne preservatives.
Oilborne preservatives include, among others, coal-tar creosote, pentachlorophenol solutions, copper naphthenate, chlorothalonil, chlorothalonil/chlorpyrifos, oxine copper, zinc naphthenate, alkyl ammonium compound, propiconazole and tebuconazole.
These chemicals are use in pressure-treatment methods and each has different uses, restrictions, benefits and hazards associated with them.
Oilborne preservatives can also have an effect on the color, odor, paintability and fire protection attributes of the treated wood.
While some of the volatile solvents may be removed after treatment doing so may adversely affect the degree of protection.
Waterborne preservatives have less of an objectionable effect on wood surfaces in terms of cleanliness, odors and paintability than oilborne preservatives. There are numerous variations of waterborne preservatives, including acid copper chromate, ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate, chromated copper arsenate, ammoniacal copper quat, ammoniacal copper citrate, copper azole and inorganic boron. As with oilborne preservatives the different waterborne preservatives each have different uses, restrictions, benefits and hazards associated with them.
The effectiveness of a preservative is dependent upon several factors, including the protective value of the chemical used, the method of application, the penetration and retention of the preservative, the proportion of heartwood to sapwood of the product and the moisture content at the time of application. The effectiveness of treatment is also very dependent upon the species of wood as the level of penetration into heartwood varies greatly by species. In general, the penetration into heartwood is greater with softwood species as opposed to hardwood species. Timbers should be properly prepared before treatment.
This includes proper peeling, seasoning or conditioning and machined.
Preservatives are applied using either a pressure process or a non-pressure process. In pressure processes the wood is impregnated with the preservative chemical in closed vessels under very high pressure.
In non-pressure processes the preservative is generally applied to the surface of the product in one of several different ways. Pressure processes include the full-cell, or Bethel, process, the modified full-cell process and the empty-cell process.
The full-cell process entails sealing the product in a treatment cylinder, inducing a vacuum, introducing the preservative and then applying pressure for a period of time until the desired penetration is achieved. The modified full-cell process is the same as the full-cell process with the exception that a final vacuum may be induced at the end of the process.
The empty-cell process is one in which pressurized air is first forced into the treatment cylinder, followed by the introduction of the preservative.
As the preservative is forced in the pressurized air is allowed to escape, keeping the pressure in the cylinder constant. After the cylinder is completely filled with preservative the pressure is increased until the wood will not absorb additional preservative. At this point the remaining preservative is drained from the cylinder and a vacuum applied.
Non-pressure processes generally consist of surface applications, soaking and steeping, diffusion, and vacuum processes.
Surface applications, through brushing or dipping, are the simplest methods of applying preservatives.
Soaking wood products for hours or days in preservative oils or steeping in waterborne preservatives is also widely used.
Diffusion is a process in which the product is first steeped in one preservative chemical and then in another, allowing the two chemicals to react.
In the vacuum process the product is placed in a treatment cylinder, an initial vacuum is induced, the preservative is introduce under vacuum, the vacuum is released and the product is allowed to soak for a period of time, after which another vacuum is induced to remove excess preservative.

Wood products exposed to under-water or marine environments are extremely susceptible to decay and require heavy-duty preservative treatments. There are two general types of wood preservatives, including oilborne preservatives and waterborne preservatives.
Oilborne preservatives include, among others, coal-tar creosote, pentachlorophenol solutions, copper naphthenate, chlorothalonil, chlorothalonil/chlorpyrifos, oxine copper, zinc naphthenate, alkyl ammonium compound, propiconazole and tebuconazole.
These chemicals are use in pressure-treatment methods and each has different uses, restrictions, benefits and hazards associated with them.
Oilborne preservatives can also have an effect on the color, odor, paintability and fire protection attributes of the treated wood.
While some of the volatile solvents may be removed after treatment doing so may adversely affect the degree of protection.
Waterborne preservatives have less of an objectionable effect on wood surfaces in terms of cleanliness, odors and paintability than oilborne preservatives. There are numerous variations of waterborne preservatives, including acid copper chromate, ammoniacal copper zinc arsenate, chromated copper arsenate, ammoniacal copper quat, ammoniacal copper citrate, copper azole and inorganic boron. As with oilborne preservatives the different waterborne preservatives each have different uses, restrictions, benefits and hazards associated with them.
The effectiveness of a preservative is dependent upon several factors, including the protective value of the chemical used, the method of application, the penetration and retention of the preservative, the proportion of heartwood to sapwood of the product and the moisture content at the time of application. The effectiveness of treatment is also very dependent upon the species of wood as the level of penetration into heartwood varies greatly by species. In general, the penetration into heartwood is greater with softwood species as opposed to hardwood species. Timbers should be properly prepared before treatment.
This includes proper peeling, seasoning or conditioning and machined.
Preservatives are applied using either a pressure process or a non-pressure process. In pressure processes the wood is impregnated with the preservative chemical in closed vessels under very high pressure.
In non-pressure processes the preservative is generally applied to the surface of the product in one of several different ways. Pressure processes include the full-cell, or Bethel, process, the modified full-cell process and the empty-cell process.
The full-cell process entails sealing the product in a treatment cylinder, inducing a vacuum, introducing the preservative and then applying pressure for a period of time until the desired penetration is achieved. The modified full-cell process is the same as the full-cell process with the exception that a final vacuum may be induced at the end of the process.
The empty-cell process is one in which pressurized air is first forced into the treatment cylinder, followed by the introduction of the preservative.
As the preservative is forced in the pressurized air is allowed to escape, keeping the pressure in the cylinder constant. After the cylinder is completely filled with preservative the pressure is increased until the wood will not absorb additional preservative. At this point the remaining preservative is drained from the cylinder and a vacuum applied.
Non-pressure processes generally consist of surface applications, soaking and steeping, diffusion, and vacuum processes.
Surface applications, through brushing or dipping, are the simplest methods of applying preservatives.
Soaking wood products for hours or days in preservative oils or steeping in waterborne preservatives is also widely used.
Diffusion is a process in which the product is first steeped in one preservative chemical and then in another, allowing the two chemicals to react.
In the vacuum process the product is placed in a treatment cylinder, an initial vacuum is induced, the preservative is introduce under vacuum, the vacuum is released and the product is allowed to soak for a period of time, after which another vacuum is induced to remove excess preservative.

How to Not Argue With Your Teen
A Parent Coach listens, supports, encourages, respects, trusts, accepts and negotiates with their teen. These are some of the common unconscious parent's habits like, criticizing, blaming, complaining, nagging, threatening, punishing and rewarding to control.
The first strategy is to replace the unconscious parent's habits with parent coach's habits, to work towards not getting into an argument with your teen.
Secondly, knowing what is your relationship with your child right now helps you to set a goal of getting from point A to point B.
If you were to use numbers to calibrate your relationship with your teen, taking one as not talking or arguing and 10 being outstanding in your connection with your teen, where are you right now? Setting a clear goal: Assuming your current reality is you felt it is a 'one', and wants to move to an 'eight' in six months' time, what would an 'eight' look like? At a one currently, what is happening right now? Are you arguing with your teen ferociously. Is it getting from bad to worse.
At an 'eight' feels like you are having a dialogue with your teen at the dinning table? An inspiring and positive goal might read, "Enjoying a dialogue with my son!" Questions to ask yourself is, "Is this specific?"; "Is this realistic?" and "Is this achievable?" Knowing where you are right now with regard to your relationship with your teen, you will have more clarity on how to achieve your goal. Essentially, you are setting a goal around your relationship with your teen. Once you are clear with where you are right now and where you want to go, the actions you take will be to focus on leading you to your goals. By replacing the common unconscious parent's habits and focussing on your new habits of listening, supporting, encouraging, respecting, trusting, accepting and negotiating with your teen, the success rate of achieving your goal will be very high.
That would save both parent and teen a lot of heart-wrenching moments.

The Park Is a Great Place to Learn!
My Granddaddy once told me that the park was a great place to learn. I didn't understand it at the time, but as I grew older, I eventually noticed that most students who depended just on the classroom for their education rarely accomplished anything significant.
The students that went on to be successful leaders all seemed to be self-starters and self-educated beyond the classroom. Somehow these young future leaders realized that a standard education only gives standard results, and they wanted more! And because they wanted more they did more than most of their classmates in school and even more importantly outside of school.
In the end, it really is simple math, isn't it? Do more, get more! Now please realize that I am not saying anything negative about our public schools or public school teachers. Some of the most dedicated people I know are public school teachers and they are doing some amazing things with our youth.
However, if you're a teen, I want you to stop relying on your teacher for everything, and do more for yourself! If you do what everybody else does, then you will get what everybody else gets. And I think you want more than that, don't you? School points you in the right direction, and even helps you get your feet off the ground. But if you're going to be successful in hitting your target, then you're going to have to take some responsibility in your own self-education.
Get committed to do this yourself because in the end it is for yourself. No one else is going to do this for you.
No one else is going to make you successful. You have to do this yourself! You have to take your learning and leadership above and beyond the classroom, and actually start applying your knowledge and leadership skills in the real world. Volunteering in your community or even getting a job is a great way to start doing this! If you are already doing this, then ask for more responsibility so you can learn your supervisor's job.
In addition, also find someone to mentor. The best way to learn is to teach. Now teens, and even tweens, go learn, lead and lay the way to a better world for all of us.
Appreciate the public education that has been given to you, but do more! And finally, thanks in advance for all that you do, and all that you will do.

The Beginning Is Now
So, here you are! At the place where dreams are born, friendships are made, weight is gained and you learn more about yourself than in the classes you pay for.
I'm here to offer mild suggestions to make the transitions through life easier and perhaps a little funnier.
I have some experience with being new to campus. I was not prepared for college mentally or emotionally.
I wasn't ready to leave home, nor was I ready to grow up. As you will learn the more you live the more things will come that you are not ready for.
You have to learn to live and just adapt to change. My first message is for those of you that want to make your mark on campus and in the world.
I can only encourage you to be yourself.
Life itself is so unpredictable and change comes so unexpectedly that there is no need to change your-self to conform to some social norm.
Many people spend their first years trying to pretend to be something they aren't.
Buying the latest clothes and shoes does not make you the "big man on campus." You'll look like the biggest loser on campus because you can't afford your books, or you've run out of money on your meal plan and you can't eat.
Don't spend your time trying to impress people.
Chances are if they don't like you for who you really are, they don't need to be in your life anyway.
You don't have to fit in to a specific "crowd" in order to make college life successful.
When it comes down to it, college life is about the experience, not how cool you were so don't be afraid to be different. Learn how to try new things; like join a Registered Student Organization, get involved within clubs for your major, go out and make friends, stay in and keep the friends you have.
There is no need for you to try and be everyone's best friend because we all know that not everyone is going to like us, and we have to be mature enough to accept that and keep it moving forward.
Go to class! You might as well; you're going to pay for it anyway! While you're in class learn something, find a major that suits you so that you can actually be awake in class. Learn how to live outside of the box, and if you have to..

build your own box. Someone is eventually going to come along knocking asking to borrow a cup of sugar, so while you're at it get to work on yourself.
How can you improve someone else's life without taking a step back and realizing and correcting your own faults? SO.

Besides if you change into someone else then who's to say the people you're trying to impress are going to like the new you anyway? Peer Pressure About Sex on Prom Night
I know that prom night is one of the biggest nights of your life.
This is a night that will go down in history books, scrap books, something you will talk about even when you are a senior citizen looking back at your young days. This is the year president Obama made history being the first African American president of the United States of America.
Prom night also will be some teens final night here on earth do to drinking and driving, as well as hit by other drunk drivers.
I urge you to stay safe.
I also want you to prepare for extreme peer pressure at the end of the night about sex.
Yes he will promise you the earth and swear he loves you just to get in your panties, please don't fall for the oakie doke games. If you fall for the games you will be left with a broken heart and a used up body. The next day you will be talked about like a dog. Listen ladies a young man likes the chase game after they get a nut and all is said and done you will be old news, he will continue to look for the good girl.
I know we have very few virgins left but ladies hold on to your prized possession, I promise you won't regret it.
The young ladies that are sexually active please have safe sex. I want to advise you to have your own condoms, there are so many HIV positive young boys and girls out here that don't know they are positive.
As well as some that will not tell you that they are positive.
I hope you don't get caught up in the feel good moment. We all want to feel good but it's not a good feeling or worth it when you have to pay for a moment of pleasure with your life. I want you to feel good when you go to the Prom sharp as hell and your the talk, the few left that is untouched that all the boys are talking about that is a dime, untouched with a future well planned.
I want you to directly represent the baddest, classiest female that the boys will be wondering where you are and who you made your lucky husband ten years later at your class reunion.
That's right represent ladies be snooty and no booty.

Listen fellas for all of you who are working on going to the NFL, as well as planned other lucrative career paths for yourself, you better play it safe.
No sex is the safest sex however you need to bring your own protection a female will plot to catch you up because she is so in love.
Yes it's true females are clever as hell and will punch holes in a condom because you will be going to part ways and explore this big world out here and they will feel threatened and will make stupid choices that they would see later was a mistake.
Guys once you have a baby the ball game changes and those checks will be used to take care of her and your child that she'll raise with another man.
