Distance Learning - Is It Right For Me?

Distance and online learning is becoming increasingly popular.

It provides a way for busy adults to go to school without completely disrupting their obligations to their job and family. As with all types of college programs, there are pros and cons to this type of learning.
You may have many questions about distance learning - is it right for me is often at the top of the list of many potential students.

There are certain characteristics that online and distance learning students must have in order to succeed.
Motivation is the number one factor contributing to the success or failure of online students.
You will not be committed to having an assignment due on a certain day of class. You will have one due date that you will be responsible for meeting each week or maybe even once a class.

It is important that you do not procrastinate and get behind in your studies. This is very easy to do when you are working at your own pace.
The next characteristic that students must have is focus.

It is easier to focus in a traditional lecture based course.

If you are attending a lecture, you are focused on simply that lecture for the hour or two that you are in class.

At home, however, you are more likely to be distracted by everything from family to television. A good way to keep your focus is by making a study schedule and sticking to it every day. During this time, you can make it clear that your only priority is your studies. You must have great written communication skills in order to succeed in an online and distance learning environment. Classes typically involve a lot of writing assignments.

Rather than a multiple choice test, most professors choose to base their grades on short writing assignments each week and a few larger writing assignments that serve as exams.

You must also be an extrovert.
Many online students feel that they do not need this characteristic in order to succeed.
Everything is online, right? Since most of the communication is done in the form of writing, you must not be fearful of expressing yourself to others and critiquing other's work. With the right set of characteristics, online learning can be a rewarding experience for many people.
With the number of online and distance learning courses currently available, you are certain to find a degree program that suits your needs.
